Letters did not get smeared but as I brushed, water turned gray, and that proved that the ink is not inherently waterproof. I had written heap of text over a canvas using Rapidograph Indian Ink Ultradraw 3085-F and Rapidograph Indian Ink Ultradraw 3084-F using different nibs, and allowed it to dry for 48 hours before touching with wet brush. Result of my tests(I had started this before contacting Chartpak Inc)…. I hope this works well for you, please do not hesitate to contact us if you need additional information. Step Two: seal the ink on the canvas with a light coat of Damar Varnish in gloss. To clarify Step One: draw on the canvas with any of the Koh-I-Noor inks. We were sucessful! We found that if you seal your ink portion with a Damar Varnish in gloss (avaliable from Grumbacher (a division of Chartpak), part # 545) you will find that your ink remains well detailed and unaffected by the paint applied over the top. We took your inquiry to the lab and tried out several methods in hopes of getting smear proof results for inks on canvas with the addition of paints. Infact Chartpak, Inc, maker of Rapidograph Indian Ink Ultradraw 3085-F ink also said the same. Thanks for all your responses, as most of you suggested the best solution was to apply a layer of Matte medium over ink layer. I would like to hear your thoughts… and hope to get these cleared ones for all. I like to use pen/ink with acrylic because I like the flexibility of ink. Please do not get confused with the timeline :-), the problem case described at the beginning of the email is a brand new painting. Currently I am using Rapidograph Indian Ink Ultradraw 3085-F, and 2-3 year back I did a painting( ) where I used both Indian-Ink and Acrylic paint successfully, but at that time I used a different ink and I do not remember anything about that ink except that it was Koh-I-noor Indian-ink. I went ahead with that painting in spite of inconsistent bleeding because I did not have the plan of using Acrylic layer on the top on Ink layer. ![]() I though that surface of GESSO board is not able to absorb ink so I tried it on canvass and situation improved but not completely. Inspite of this it continued to bleed on GESSO board ( smooth & textured), and I did this experiment using three-four pens and got same result. ![]() I worked on this and made sure that the pens are dry using hair-drier and also used to new pen cleaning liquid. ![]() This is not the first time that I am encountering such problem few months back I had similar problem on GESSO board and at that time I suspected my Radiograph pen cleaning procedure, I thought that before re-filling, I might not have dried the pen thoroughly. As you see in this picture, the letters on left look smudged but not the ones on the right side, and both of these were drawn at the same time using same pen. Using Rapidograph Indian Ink Ultradraw 3085-F ink and Rapidograph Pen, I scribbled few things on the canvas and left it to dry for little over 30 minutes, and on the top of ink-work I painted acrylic color, and just some of under lying ink-work started to bleed. This is about my latest painting where I have Indian ink drawing on the bottom layer and a transparent acrylic layer above that, and as soon as I applied acrlyic paint, Indian-ink started bleeding. Title of this post might have given an impression that is not related to “Acrylic” but please read further.
